Murcia company develops new product to calm pets during fireworks
The CBD-based spray aims to help dogs and cats cope with fireworks, firecrackers and other stressful situations
A Murcia-based biotechnology company has launched a new product designed to help dogs and cats cope with fireworks, firecrackers and other loud noises, as well as stress caused by travel or changes to their normal surroundings.
Votum Labs, based in Lorquí and founded in 2021 by entrepreneurs Alejandro Martí and Borja Vera, has introduced the product under its SOS by Happy Pets brand, which focuses on animal health and wellbeing.
The company says summer celebrations and local festivals can be particularly difficult for pets, with loud noises often causing anxiety that can continue for several days. Other stressful situations can include long car journeys, changes to routine and unfamiliar environments.
Signs of stress can include trembling, excessive panting, restlessness, loss of appetite, difficulty settling and hiding. In more serious cases, frightened animals may try to escape during fireworks displays.
The new product contains naturally sourced CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid extracted from industrial hemp. Votum Labs says the formula is filtered to remove traces of THC and is designed to promote calm without sedation or changing an animal's personality.
It comes as a small spray that can be applied to the animal's lip a few minutes before a stressful event. The company says the dosage is based on the animal's size and can be adjusted when necessary.
Votum Labs has produced an initial 30,000 units of the product.
The company also recommends keeping pets indoors and providing them with a safe place to hide during fireworks or other loud celebrations. For journeys, owners are advised to make regular stops and avoid sudden changes in driving speed.
SOS by Happy Pets is the latest addition to Votum Labs' portfolio, alongside Cronidol, which focuses on joint and musculoskeletal care, and Vezelay Lab, a range of cannabinoid-based dermocosmetic products.
The laboratory says it is now focusing on expanding both nationally and internationally, with further investment in research, formulation and scientific validation.
