ARCHIVED - Mazarron piles on the pressure to keep 24-hour health service with rally on September 3
The summer health service in Mazarrón will be drastically cut back from September 4
As repeated demands for the 24-hour emergency health service in Mazarrón to remain open from September 4 continue to fall on deaf ears – despite direct pleas to the Regional Ministry of Health in Murcia – the Town Hall has organised a "rally for health" which will take place outside Puerto de Mazarrón medical centre at 8pm on Saturday September 3.
At a press conference at the clinic on Tuesday August 30, the Councillor for Health, Francisco García pointed out that due to a decision by the regional government, Mazarrón will only have three ambulances to cover the whole municipality from mid-September.
The town has been calling for the 24-hour health service to be open 365 days a year since 2019, stressing that it's the "right" of more than 13,000 people who live in Mazarrón – a population that more than triples during the summer.
On Thursday September 1, town mayor, Gaspar Miras, encouraged the public to fight for "a historical demand", highlighting the "current health deficiencies" in the municipality.
"We are more than 13,000 inhabitants without this essential service, society demands that we fight to solve this problem," he added.
The rally will be attended by representatives from across the political spectrum as well as various groups such as Mazarrón Avanza, Plasma Salud and the Association of Neighbours of Puerto de Mazarrón.
