ARCHIVED - Changes to San Javier and Cartagena street market opening days
The Mar Menor localities will soon have more street markets, open on more days
Outdoor street markets are an ever-popular and free form of entertainment for many people who live in Murcia and visitors to the area. Now, a number of changes and developments to the open-air markets in Cartagena and other Mar Menor towns are being welcomed as a positive step for local tourism and commerce.
Firstly, it has been decided that the street markets in Cartagena and the surrounding areas will remain open on the next three public holidays, including Bank Holiday Monday next May 2. As well as street markets on Monday May 2, there will be markets operating in the Murcia municipality on the August 15 and September 23 bank holidays.
In addition to giving the green light for markets to open on these holidays, another proposal of the majority associations of street vendors has also been approved, namely to hold the market of Ribera de San Javier (Cenit) on Saturdays in December. With this new ruling, the San Javier markets will be open on Saturdays 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 December 2022.
Finally, regarding the new street market being proposed to open in El Albujón, the proposal is ready and will go to the next Local Government Board. Once approved by the Board, it will be necessary to make a specific modification of the Street Vending Ordinance to include this new market. This procedure should be resolved within a maximum period of two months, after which point the new market will be ready to begin setting up.
