ARCHIVED - Town Hall debates strengthening legal action in incidents similar to the suspected Camposol murder case
Mazarrón Council Pleno to debate stonger measures to fight gender violence in the wake of the Camposol tragedy
A motion sparked by the recent suspected murder in Camposol is to be debated at the Mazarrón Council Pleno on December 23, having been tabled by the local UIDM Party whose leader stated in a press release "Politicians have to be committed to the reality around them and take a step forward, institutional statements are all very well but it is necessary to move to action".
If the motion of the independents goes ahead, the Town Hall of Mazarrón would be the first in the Region to use this tool recognised in the Spanish Constitution.
It is an instrument that other public administrations are already using in the set of actions to fight gender violence, and is recognized in the Constitution in Article 125. This is the case, for example, of the Autonomous Communities of Madrid, Comunidad Valenciana, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra and the Town Halls of Bilbao, Huelva, and Barakaldo. If the UIDM proposal is approved by plenary next December 22, Mazarrón Town Hall would be the first Council in the Region of Murcia to defend victims of gender violence.
The UIDM press release goes on to explain that the initiative arises from the death of Vannesa Carter (52 years old) on December 4, suspectedly at the hands of her husband Michael Carter (69 years old), in the Camposol urbanisation, which "reveals to us that our municipality is no stranger to the cruelest expression of gender violence, femicide”.
