Torrevieja has just been named a top family destination
The city has received the Family Tourism Seal from the Spanish Federation of Large Families, recognising its beaches, nature and leisure offerings
It has been a good week for Torrevieja. On Thursday, the city received the Family Tourism Seal from the Spanish Federation of Large Families (FEFN), an official certification recognising it as a destination well suited to families travelling with children. The distinction was presented to Mayor Eduardo Jorge Dolón by Eduardo Hervás, president of the Federation of Large Families of the Valencian Community. The seal, which has been running since 2013, is awarded to destinations, accommodations and tourism businesses that genuinely cater to the needs of families and help make the organisation of holidays easier. Around 200 listings across Spain currently hold the certification, and Torrevieja joins a Valencian Community list that already includes Valencia, Peñíscola and Alcalà de Xivert-Alcossebre.
The recognition reflects what many families who visit Torrevieja already know. The city combines good beaches, accessible amenities and some genuinely distinctive attractions.
La Mata and El Cura beaches both offer accessible facilities, while the La Mata Lagoons Natural Park gives families the chance to visit the Pink Lagoon or take a tourist train tour of the salt flats.
The Floating Museums, home to the S-61 Delfín submarine, said to be the first submarine of its kind open to the public in Spain, are another draw.
The city has also put together a dedicated guide to help younger visitors explore what the town has to offer during their stay.
The timing of the award sits neatly alongside another piece of good news for the city. The construction contract for Torrevieja's ambitious new lighthouse park has been awarded, with work expected to begin in August and the park potentially ready by spring 2027. The 30,000 square metre site at Alto de la Casilla will include panoramic views over the salt lagoons and sea, dedicated play zones and hundreds of newly planted trees, and came in 13% under the original €11.9 million budget.
For a city that has long been popular with British expats and visitors, official recognition of its family credentials is a welcome addition to an already strong summer.
