Renfe allows electric scooters back on trains from today

The ban ends on AVE, Cercanías, Media Distancia and Larga Distancia services, except in Catalonia and the Basque Country

Electric scooters can once again be carried on most Renfe trains from Monday September 7, ending a ban introduced almost three years ago after a series of battery fires on public transport.

The change applies to AVE, Cercanías, Media Distancia and Larga Distancia services across Spain, although scooters will not yet be permitted on Rodalies services in Catalonia or Cercanías Euskadi in the Basque Country.

There are strict conditions for taking a scooter on board. It must be an approved vehicle registered with the DGT, have the required identification, valid compulsory civil liability insurance and a circulation certificate confirming that it meets the technical requirements.

Once on the train, the scooter must be switched off and folded for the entire journey. It must be stored in the luggage area or somewhere that doesn't interfere with other passengers, while aisles, doors, emergency exits and priority areas must be kept clear. Charging the scooter's battery on board is prohibited.

Renfe will carry scooters free of charge as special luggage, provided passengers also have just one piece of hand luggage measuring no more than 55 x 35 x 25 centimetres.

The original ban came into force on December 11, 2023, following several incidents involving electric scooter batteries. Renfe says the decision to reverse it follows the introduction of new national rules covering personal mobility vehicles, including compulsory registration, identification and insurance requirements.

The change will be welcomed by commuters who use scooters to cover the first or last part of their journey between home, work, college or a railway station. Combining trains with electric scooters can make public transport more practical for people who live or work some distance from a station.

Renfe says it will launch information campaigns for passengers and provide additional guidance to operational and security staff to ensure the new rules are followed.

The company is also bringing its policy more closely into line with several other European railway operators, where electric scooters are already permitted under specific safety conditions.
