Spain is facing another couple of days of intense September heat before temperatures take a dramatic turn lower on Wednesday, with some parts of the country set to lose more than 10 degrees in just 24 hours.

 

AEMET is forecasting temperatures well above normal for much of Spain this week, with the hottest conditions continuing across the south and east. The Guadalquivir Valley will once again approach 40°C, while parts of Andalucía, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Aragón and the Region of Murcia will also see temperatures in the upper 30s.

 

The week gets off to another very hot start, particularly in southern and eastern Spain, where temperatures will remain high enough to trigger weather warnings in several areas.

 

Andalucía, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, the Region of Murcia, Navarra and the Valencian Community are all affected by heat warnings, with orange warnings in parts of Andalucía and Catalonia. Temperatures could reach 40°C around the Guadalquivir, while Murcia's Vega del Segura is expected to reach 38°C.

 

The contrast with northern Spain will be striking, with temperatures falling sharply in the Cantabrian area and some parts of the north seeing maximum temperatures more than 10 degrees lower than the previous day.

 

The heat will continue on Tuesday, although temperatures will begin to ease in some areas. Much of the centre and south will remain very warm, with temperatures in the mid to high 30s and another hot day expected in the Region of Murcia, where the Vega del Segura could reach 39°C.

 

The weather will remain mostly settled, although cloud will increase in some inland areas and there could be some isolated showers or storms in the north and mountainous areas.

 

This is when the biggest change arrives, with temperatures dropping sharply across large parts of the country as cooler air moves in from the north.

 

Central Spain will see the mercury fall from the mid to high 30s on Tuesday to around the high 20s on Wednesday, while some inland areas of Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid could also see showers. Madrid, for example, is forecast to drop from around 35°C on Tuesday to 28°C on Wednesday.

 

There will be more cloud across the north and centre, with rain possible in parts of northern and central Spain. The drop will be particularly noticeable after the prolonged spell of exceptional heat.

 

Thursday will bring a much cooler and more settled picture to most of Spain, with plenty of sunshine returning as temperatures recover slightly in some areas.

 

Central Spain will generally see highs around 28-31°C, although this will feel considerably cooler after the extreme temperatures at the start of the week. Nights will also become noticeably fresher inland, with some areas dropping into the low teens.

 

The change doesn't mean summer is over, however. AEMET expects temperatures to remain above normal across much of Spain during the week as a whole, with the broader September outlook continuing to favour unusually warm conditions.
