ARCHIVED - Rat-infested kiosks to be removed from Malaga streets
The old vending kiosks dotted around Malaga city have stood empty for months

Malaga city council has ordered dozens of unused kiosks, which at one time would have sold newspapers and magazines, to be torn down by the owners if they have stood idle for more than six months. The 95 boarded-up structures have become breeding grounds for rodents, according to Councillor Elisa Pérez de Siles, who added that many have been out of business for more than a year.
“Many are dirty and are a nest for rats,” she said.
The city regulations stipulate that these kiosks can’t be closed for more than six months except in exceptional circumstances and the owners will now have one month to dismantle the make-shift buildings.
If the owners refuse to do so, the council will take the matter into their own hands and send them the bill. The units will be kept in storage for five months, after which time they’ll be destroyed.
Aside from the hygiene issues, the council wants to get rid of the unused kiosks to make way for new licence holders who will enjoy an expanded business model. As of January, these kiosks can benefit from being attached to an ATM and can sell take-away coffees, juices and prepared food like sandwiches in addition to concert tickets.
