ARCHIVED - Overgrown grass and weeds in Mazarron are a fire risk, warn police
Residents warned not to throw cigarette butts on the floor, as a measure to prevent wildfires
Mazarrón police have launched an appeal for people not to throw cigarette butts or glass on the ground, to avoid the possibility of starting fires.
The call comes after the police force, along with firefighters from the severely understaffed Mazarrón fire station, were called out to respond to an accidental fire in the municipality.
According to sources, it is the rains last month that have led to grassy areas in Mazarrón becoming overgrown, which increases the risk of wildfires.
“The rains have left us with an increase in vegetation which, with the current high temperatures, means an increase in the risk of fires,” said Local Police on their Facebook page.
