ARCHIVED - Minute of silence in memory of the victim in the Camposol suspected murder case
The national government Delegate for Murcia holds a minute’s silence in memory of female victim of suspected gender violence
The Spanish government's Delegate in the Region of Murcia, José Vélez, who was in Torre Pacheco this Tuesday December 6, Constitution Day, presided over a minute's silence in memory of the Camposol resident allegedly murdered by her husband at the weekend.
The tribute took place at the Torre Pacheco gold medal award ceremony for the town's Civil Protection Volunteer Association, and dozens of people remained silent in memory of the second fatality due to gender violence in the Region of Murcia in 2022.
The tragedy occurred on December 4 in Camposol, where the British couple resided. The man, who reportedly had a history of gender violence and who was found at the home in a state of intoxication, was remanded to prison by Totana Court number 3 on Monday.
José Vélez stated in his Torre Pacheco address the need to "isolate the abuser and definitively defeat the harmful culture of silence that forces many victims, out of fear or shame, to remain silent about attacks."
"We need unity and social and institutional resolve to end gender violence," said Vélez, who strongly condemned the murder.
In the early hours of Sunday, on hearing shouting and threats and seeing a body in the garden of a neighbouring house, local residents called the emergency services, who attended shortly afterwards and discovered the body of the 56-year-old female victim. She had sustained a servere blow to the head and unfortunately, when paramedics reached the scene, was already deceased.
Further investigations found her 68-year-old male partner inside the property, allegedly heavily intoxicated.
As is sometimes the case in domestic violence incidents, there was a reported history of abuse, according to the Spanish media. The victim had reported gender abuse several times since 2007, resulting in court protection orders, the last of which lapsed in 2014.
The 68-year-old husband of the victim was arrested on suspicion of carrying out the assault and appeared at Totana Court of First Instance and Instruction number 3 on Monday morning, when after a brief hearing he was placed in provisional detention accused of killing his wife.
