ARCHIVED - Hospitality workers in the Region of Murcia vote to strike in December
The industrial action has been planned for Cartagena and Murcia
The hospitality industry has voted to strike next month after talks between the employers and the unions broke down this week. The CC OO and UGT unions have scheduled the work stoppages for December 16 in Cartagena and the 22nd in Murcia city.
Both parties involved in the dispute met again on Thursday to discuss salary increases and low-season contracts that effect more than 37,000 workers in the Region of Murcia, but the talks ended in stalemate. The current agreement in place for hospitality workers hasn’t been reviewed since 2008 and in a statement the unions claim that the employers' associations HoyTú and Hostecar "have not brought any new proposal and have even refused to include in the minutes the proposals discussed today by both parties."
The unions added that the business associations "have even gone so far as to deny issues collected and signed by both parties in previous meetings" regarding supplements that workers receive when they are on leave and receive Social Security benefits.
Although the groups will engage in another round of negotiations next week, the strike has already been organised given "the lack of willingness on the part of the employers to reach an agreement."
