ARCHIVED - Car with UK licence plate involved in accident in Mazarron
The driver of the car could not be located at the scene, and had probably fled due to the vehicle not being legally registered
There were two traffic accidents on the Mazarrón-Leiva RM-D4 road yesterday afternoon, one involving a car with a UK number plate and the other with a licence from an unspecified country that is not valid to drive in Spain. This road to the west of Mazarrón is notorious for motorists driving over the speed limit, which is 60kph in most places but which an unfortunate number of drivers choose to exceed.
In the first incident, the driver who came off the road was identified and luckily emerged unscathed. However, he was booked by police for not having insurance and for driving with a licence “that is not valid in Spain,” according to Local Police.
In the second incident, the vehicle was found to have swerved off the road but the driver was nowhere to be found.“This car had UK licence plates which were not valid for circulation,” police said, adding that it had been transferred to the municipal depot.
If you have a car imported from the UK in Spain, you have to change the registration on it to Spanish plates after 30 days if you are a resident, or 6 months if you are not a resident.
