Camposol park renamed in honour of late Mazarron Councillor
Public park in Camposol’s Sector A renamed in honour of Mazarrón Councillor, Silvana Buxton
Ceremony held on Friday April 12 to rename Camposol’s Central Park in Sector A in honour of Mazarrón Councillor, Silvana Buxton.
At the Plenary meeting of Mazarrón Town Council held on Tuesday, October 31 a motion was put forward to rename Central Park in Sector A of the Camposol urbanisation to “Councillor Silvana Elisabetta Buxton Park” in honour of Councillor Silvana Buxton, who was Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol and International Relations since June 2019 until her death last year. The proposal had cross-party support and was approved unanimously and the park was duly renamed on April 12 2024 (see picture gallery below).
Winning a seat in the 2019 municipal election as a PSOE Councillor, Silvana was appointed Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol and International Relations. Although this new role presented its own problems with administrative red tape and council procedures, Silvana never gave up and was the President of the Mazarrón Council Commission which proposed the forming of the Rambla de los Aznares Round Table to include regional and national government departments. Such was Silvana’s persistence that the Round Table was approved within 2 months of the new council taking power.
Other achievements Silvana secured for Camposol include the Children’s playground situated in the park that now bears her name, the Football pitch on sector D, overhauling the medical centre and social centre, public area gardening contracts, pushing for the Council to take responsibility for the public roads and areas, dropped kerbs around B Sector Commercial Centre for wheelchair and child carriage access, the start of new street lighting contracts (C Sector South), chasing the asphalting contract for the main dual carriageway through C and D sectors and many other problems solved for individuals. Silvana had a large “to do list” when taking office, but COVID put a 2-year dent in her plans, followed by her illness.
Silvana passed away on Friday, October 20 2023 after a battle with cancer. Italian by birth, Silvana lived much of her life in England although never losing the Latin passion for causes she felt needed help, married to Geoff, she was the mother of three children and grandmother of seven grandchildren.
A translation of the plaque unveiled at the ceremony reads:
