Central Park in Camposol to be renamed in honour of Silvana Buxton
Mazarrón Town Council approves proposal to rename Central Park in Sector A of the Camposol urbanisation
At the full meeting of Mazarrón Town Council held on Tuesday, October 31 a motion was put forward to rename Central Park in Sector A of the Camposol urbanisation “Councillor Silvana Elisabetta Buxton Park” in honour of Councillor Silvana Buxton, who was Councillor for Camposol and International Relations from June 2019 until her recent death. The proposal had cross party-support and was approved unanimously.
Silvana passed away on Friday, October 20 after a battle with cancer. Italian by birth, Silvana lived much of her life in England although never losing the Latin passion for causes she felt needed help, married to Geoff, she was the mother of three children and grandmother of seven grandchildren.
Winning a seat in the 2019 municipal election as a PSOE Councillor, Silvana was appointed Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol and International Relations. Although this new role presented its own problems with administrative red tape and council procedures, Silvana never gave up and was the President of the Mazarrón Council Commission which proposed the forming of the Rambla de los Aznares Roundtable to include regional and national government departments, such was Silvana’s persistence the Roundtable was approved within 2 months of the new council taking power.
Silvana worked tirelessly for Camposol and the International Community, fielding dozens of emails and calls from constituents every day. It is fitting that Central Park has been chosen to be renamed in Silvana’s honour as it was the site of one of her first tangible successes when, after taking up the residents 20 year call for a children’s playground, Silvana pushed the project through and in November 2021, after an 18-month delay during the Covid pandemic, the children’s playground was officially inaugurated in Central Park. At around the same time another project Silvana championed for the residents, the football pitch on Sector D was also opened.
At the Pleno meeting, Jesús García Vivancos was sworn in to replace Silvana on the coalition benches as per Spanish convention but the departmental responsibilities are yet to be apportioned.
