Alicante-Valencia rail link reopens on December 22
The Cercanías commuter line is the main connection from Alicante city and was damaged during last month’s floods
After weeks of disruption, Alicante is finally set to regain its rail connection with Valencia, with the C2 Cercanías commuter line scheduled to reopen on December 22.
The announcement was made by Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, during a public appearance in Valencia, bringing a sigh of relief to commuters who have been forced to rely on alternative modes of transport.
The C2 line, which connects Alicante city with Valencia, has been out of commission since the devastating DANA storms hit the region in October. The section of track leading to Carcaixent was particularly badly damaged, with more than 50 kilometres of track in need of repair or replacement.
However, thanks to the hard work of Adif, the managing body responsible for the rail network, this job is now nearing completion.
In the meantime, Renfe has been operating a combined bus and train service to connect Alicante with Valencia, with passengers taking the bus from Carcaixent to Albacete and then continuing on to Valencia by train. However, with the reopening of the Cercanías line, this temporary solution will soon become a thing of the past.
Mr Puente’s announcement is just the latest in a series of positive developments in the region's recovery efforts. In the past 20 days, the Ministry has made significant progress in restoring traffic on damaged roads, with 10 kilometres of routes in Valencia now reopened. This brings the total number of kilometres recovered to date to 160.
The traffic authorities have also reported that the A-7, V-30, V-31, A-3 and N-3 roads now fully operational. In Alicante, traffic has also been restored, with a section of the N-3 in the area of Pontón de Requena now flowing as normal.
At the same time, work has begun on an emergency consultancy contract to determine the damages and necessary actions to rebuild local structures damaged by the DANA in nine municipalities of Valencia.
The Ministry has already agreed to undertake the repair of 36 buildings in several municipalities, including Aldaia, Alfafar and Manises. The list of affected areas is expected to grow as the recovery efforts continue.
