ARCHIVED - Aguilas recognised for its commitment to recycling and the environment
The Murcia municipality competed for the prestigious Green Flag award and significantly increased glass recycling this summer
Ecovidrio, the non-profit entity in charge of managing the recycling of glass container waste in Spain, has recognized Águilas as one of the Spanish coastal municipalities most committed to sustainability.
The Murcia municipality competed for the prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award and although Águilas didn’t scoop the top prize, it was applauded for exceeding Ecovidrio’s objective and increasing glass recycling by 0.4% this summer.
The recognition was delivered as part of the third edition of the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes, an Ecovidrio initiative that aims to reduce waste in popular tourist areas and reward the commitment of local businesses to sustainability during the summer months.
During the high season, an incredible 250,032 kilograms of glass bottles and containers were collected by Águilas City Council, a significant increase on recent years, and no fewer than 148 hospitality establishments participated in the environmental campaign.
Águilas was up against stiff competition from six other Murcian municipalities which consisted of 775 catering venues in all, but San Javier took the ultimate top prize and was awarded the coveted green flag.
