ARCHIVED - Work starts as Camposol waves goodbye to an ugly disused eyesore
Camposol Business Association (CBA) finally gets the green light to remove the never-used post boxes in the Commercial Centre carpark
The much maligned and dilapidated post boxes in the car park of the Camposol B Sector Commercial Centre have been an eyesore for many years. They have been used as rubbish recepticles and late-night toilets but never for their intended purpose, and the whereabouts of the keys is a mystery, and at the first meeting of the Camposol Business Association (CBA) in 2021 it was decided to make enquiries about the removal of the metal monstrosities.
However, as the nearly 650 mailboxes stand on private land and are part of the official mail distribution network their removal was not as easy as hoped. Firstly there was the problem of potential mail delivery interruption (even though they had never been used), and to overcome this obstacle Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol, Silvana Buxton, made contact with the Correos Area Manager who after assessing the mailboxes confirmed that they were unusable, not only because of the condition of the boxes but also because they did not meet official specifications.
The next problem was the ownership of the land and the mailboxes themselves, and to this end CBA President, Julie Townsend, contacted majority owners Grupo MASA and received permission to remove and dispose of the said structures. The removal started on December 14 and it is hoped the permanently redundant objects will be recycled into something useful: in the meantime a more practical use will be decided for the now vacant space.
