Which supermarkets are open in Spain on Monday October 12?
Find out which major supermarket chains are opening on Spain’s National Day and where to check your local store

October 12 is a public holiday across Spain, but that does not necessarily mean shoppers will be faced with a wall of closed supermarket doors.
Spain’s National Day, also known as Día de la Hispanidad or Fiesta Nacional de España, falls on a Monday this year, giving many people a three-day weekend. However, supermarket opening rules can vary considerably depending on the chain, region and individual store, so there is no single nationwide answer to the question of which supermarkets will be open.
The good news is that several major chains have already published their plans for Monday October 12.
Mercadona
Mercadona customers should stock up before the holiday because the supermarket chain is closing virtually all of its 1,598 stores across Spain on Monday October 12.
The company has confirmed that October 12 will be treated as a national holiday, with its shops closed. Mercadona has also advised customers to check its online store finder for the latest information about individual supermarkets.
Consum
Consum is one of the best options for anyone who needs to do a supermarket run on October 12.
The Valencian cooperative has confirmed that its supermarkets will open across Spain on the national holiday, although with reduced hours of 9am to 2.30pm. The only confirmed exception is its store in Terrassa, which will remain closed.
Lidl
Lidl is another chain where shoppers should not assume that every store will have the same opening arrangements.
The chain's own store finder is already showing individual shops with special opening times for October 12. For example, the Lidl on Avenida Doctor Jiménez Díaz in Alicante will open from 9am to 10pm, while its Torrevieja store on Avenida Desiderio Rodríguez will open from 9am to 9.30pm.
Lidl stores in other parts of Spain are also showing October 12 openings, although times can differ, so the safest option is to check the specific branch rather than relying on a national opening time.
ALDI
ALDI is also opening selected supermarkets on October 12, with its own store locator already showing special holiday hours for individual branches.
For example, the ALDI on Avenida de Denia in Alicante is listed as open from 9am to 9.30pm, while the Torrevieja store on Avenida Tirso de Molina has the same opening hours. An ALDI in Getafe, Madrid, is listed as open from 10am to 9pm.
Carrefour
Carrefour has a particularly flexible approach to public holidays, with many of its supermarkets and hypermarkets opening on Sundays and festive days.
However, Carrefour stresses that not all of its stores follow the same schedule. The chain has an official festive-opening checker where shoppers can enter their postcode or municipality and check whether their local Carrefour is open.
Carrefour Express, Carrefour Market and larger hypermarkets can all have different opening calendars, so checking the individual shop is essential.
Alcampo
Alcampo also has stores that open on Sundays and public holidays, particularly where local commercial-opening rules allow it.
Its opening arrangements depend on the individual store and the commercial calendar in the area. Some branches can therefore remain open while others close for the holiday. Alcampo's own online information confirms that Sunday and public-holiday services are linked to the legal opening calendar for each shop.
DIA
DIA is another chain where there is no simple nationwide yes-or-no answer.
The company operates a large network of stores, including independently operated shops, meaning opening arrangements can differ between branches. DIA's store finder is already showing its current October information, but customers should check their individual shop for the October 12 opening hours.
The reason there can be so much variation between supermarkets is that although October 12 is a national public holiday, commercial opening is also governed by regional and local rules. Tourist areas and other officially designated areas can have greater freedom to open on Sundays and public holidays.
This means a supermarket in a popular tourist resort may be trading normally on October 12 while another branch of exactly the same chain elsewhere in Spain is closed.
For anyone who needs to shop on Monday, the safest approach is therefore to check the supermarket's own store locator before setting off. The information is being updated as the holiday approaches and individual branches can have different opening times.
