Unemployment in Lorca hits all-time low
Lorca currently has the best employment figures it’s seen since 2009

At the end of July, some 3,339 people were out of work in Lorca, 252 fewer than at the end of 2024, according to the latest report from the Observatory of the State Employment Service.
The encouraging data “show once again that we are doing things right, and we will continue along this path,” said Rosa María Medina, Councillor for Local Development and Employment at Lorca City Council.
She explained that job creation in Lorca has been trending upwards all year; in May, there were 3,417 unemployed people, in June, 3,354, and now the figure has dropped to 3,339; "showing a clear positive trend, as is the case with the year-on-year rate, which reflects the decrease in unemployment (-8.67%), levels not reached since May 2009."
When looking at jobs by sector, June already showed a drop in unemployment among service workers and people registering for the first time, with 83 and 15 fewer unemployed, respectively. In July, the primary sector also joined this positive trend, with 25 fewer unemployed, while first-time job seekers saw another reduction of 9.
"And we are immersed in a new municipal model that we are committed to from the Government of Lorca, with Fulgencio Gil at the helm, with more work and more vocational training for the unemployed, more housing, more entrepreneurs and a stronger business and productive fabric, with actions that revitalise the city and that truly constitute a boost for the economy and Lorca society," said Ms Medina.
The councillor recalled that last year ended with 3,591 unemployed, "a figure not seen for almost two decades."
Focusing on current measures, the councillor highlighted the policies being carried out to improve vocational training and employability.
"We are talking about the Business Incubator, ongoing training days, collaborations with CECLOR and 41 other companies, with AMUSAL, among others."
"We're talking," Ms Medina added, "about programs like My First Job or Activa T, with different job placement and job search pathways. These are initiatives developed by the Lorca regional government so that unemployed people of all ages, with special attention to vulnerable sectors of society such as young people, women, and those over 50, can access training and 'Professional Certificates in different disciplines.' These programs cover a wide range of topics, from cybersecurity to plumbing, construction, trade and installation of renewable energy facilities. The range is extremely broad, with high employability rates and figures approaching 50% of people who have found a job."
Finally, she highlighted the role of Lorca’s wider economy.
"It is also worth noting that the commerce, accommodation and hospitality sectors are enriched not only by promotional campaigns but also by the wide range of events and celebrations that take place in Lorca throughout the year, positioning it as the economic, cultural and social epicentre of the Region," concluded Rosa Medina.
