UK-Spain youth mobility scheme rejected by Labour Government
The rejected proposal would have allowed Spanish youngsters to study and work in the UK
Despite UK Prime Minister Keir Stamer’s statement earlier in the week that he would “consider” a youth mobility agreement with Spain, the Labour Government has now confirmed that the proposal is off the table.
This development comes as a response to Spanish President Pedro Sánchez’s proposal during private talks with Sir Keir Starmer at the recent European Political Community summit.
A UK government spokesperson stated unequivocally that “the government is not considering a youth mobility scheme,” a popular initiative that would have allowed Spanish youngsters to live and work in Britain.
The UK already has similar youth schemes with 13 countries including Australia, New Zealand and Canada, which lets them study or work in Britain for up to two years. However, the Labour Government remains committed to its stance on Brexit, vowing not to rejoin the single market, customs union, or restore freedom of movement.
The European Commission (EC) had previously expressed interest in negotiating a youth mobility scheme for UK citizens aged 18-30 with EU member states. This proposal garnered support from thousands of voters who wrote to their MPs advocating for its acceptance.
Despite this, the UK government maintains its preference for bilateral agreements over an EU-wide deal.
