Beyond the beach: active holidays across the Canary Islands all year round
Explore volcanoes, forests and coastlines through walking, water sports, cycling and wildlife trips
The Canary Islands have long offered far more than traditional beach holidays. Across the eight islands, visitors can walk through volcanic landscapes, explore the coastline by kayak, watch whales and dolphins or take to the air on a tandem paragliding flight. The subtropical climate makes outdoor activities possible throughout the year. The islands enjoy more than 300 sunny days annually, temperatures rarely become uncomfortable and the scenery changes dramatically from one island to the next. Volcanic coastlines, ravines, mountain ranges, laurel forests and protected areas are all within reach.
Walk through volcanic landscapes
Hiking is one of the easiest ways to discover the islands. There are gentle trails for families and beginners, as well as longer routes for experienced walkers. Popular locations include Teide and the Anaga massif in Tenerife, Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma, Garajonay National Park on La Gomera and Roque Nublo in Gran Canaria.
Many paths are clearly marked, although guides are available for more demanding sections.
Make the most of the water
The islands are well known for their wind and waves. Fuerteventura is particularly popular for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, while Famara beach in Lanzarote attracts surfers. El Médano in Tenerife and several locations in Gran Canaria regularly host international competitions. Local schools and courses cater for different levels.
Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling provide access to caves, cliffs and beaches that cannot easily be reached from land. Catamaran, sailing boat and glass-bottomed boat trips are also available around Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera and La Palma.
The clear waters and underwater volcanic formations make the islands popular with divers. Beginners can try a first dive with an instructor, while certified divers often head for El Hierro, Lanzarote and La Palma. Sea turtles, rays, tropical fish and groupers may be seen beneath the surface.
Between Tenerife and La Gomera, resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins make wildlife-watching trips possible throughout the year. Boat operators place strong emphasis on responsible behaviour around the animals.
Finding the right island
