ARCHIVED - Treatment areas in Camposol for dangerous processionary caterpillars
Mazarrón Council are to focus treatment for dangerous processionary caterpillar on affected areas
Following reported sightings Mazarrón Council have instructed contractor Lokímica Laboratories to treat the affected areas to reduce the risks to animals and people.
The areas identified are mainly on sectors A and C. The processionary caterpillar or Thaumetopea pitycampa abounds in pine forests in southern Europe and South America, where it is a widespread pest. In addition to pines, it also lives in cedars and firs. The caterpillars (larval stage) are covered in stinging hairs that break off and float in the air, which is why they can cause ear, nose and throat irritation in humans, as well as intense allergic reactions. The substance that gives it this stinging ability is a thermolabile toxin called Thaumatopin.
Impact on human and animal health
The greatest danger caused by the pine processionary caterpillar is a dangerous rash that it can cause to people and domestic animals.
For this reason, it is recommended to avoid contact with the caterpillars in any way, since the irritation is produced by the stinging hair and a minimal contact with them can cause the hair to break off and float in the air, disperse and sting on contact. If the caterpillars are seen, it is advisable to contact the 112 emergency telephone number or report online to Linea Verde. The incident will then be communicated to the corresponding department
