Torrevieja becomes the first Alicante town to install Christmas lights
The festive decorations will adorn the city centre as well as several outlying districts of Torrevieja this Christmas
We haven’t even celebrated Halloween yet but Torrevieja is well on its way to becoming the first place in the province to install its Christmas lights. The Costa Blanca city is getting into the festive spirit early and several cranes have already made an appearance Plaza de la Constitución.
Garlands of lights are being strung along the streets in anticipation of the grand switch-on. There’s no set date yet, but it always comes a little earlier in Torrevieja – last year, Christmas was in full swing by December 1.
Believe it or not, Torrevieja isn’t actually that ahead of the game. The city council in Vigo, which is in Galicia to the north of Spain, started installing the Christmas lights in July.
Back on the Costa Blanca, the contract for the festive decorations has been awarded to a new company this year, Iluminaciones Granja SL, which is taking care of the job for 387,467 euros, around 60,000 less than what the council had originally budgeted.
In total, the entire Christmas lighting display will consist of 534 lights, including arches and decorations on lampposts with Christmas motifs using LED technology. The lighting will thus reach around 70 streets, squares, avenues and residential areas throughout the municipality of Torrevieja.
And just like last year, a 20-metre-high Christmas tree with LED lights will take centre stage on the Juan Aparicio promenade. Three other 15-metre-high trees will also be erected, one each in the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol (La Mata), Plaza de Oriente (along with a star on the façade of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús parish church) and at the entrance to the 'Tavi y Carmona' Sports Palace.
An ornamental ball will also be installed in Plaza Miguel Hernández, next to the Municipal Theatre, and the city’s main shopping district, Calle Ramón Gallud, will be adorned with customised twinkly lights for the first time.
But the fun isn’t confined to the city centre and the lights will stretch to outlying urbanisations including La Siesta, Torreta Florida, Los Balcones and Aguas Nuevas.
