The Costa Blanca is renowned for its stunning coastline and crystal waters, a major draw for water sport lovers looking for a break with a dash of adventure.
Alicante province, thanks to its rocky coastline, offers a cluster of beautiful beaches that are truly a snorkellers paradise. And below are five perfect places along the province's coastline where you can enjoy this water sport that attracts more and more followers every year.
1. Javea (Xàbia)
The dazzling spots in Javea in the Marina Alta are perfect for discovering life at the bottom of the sea. Cala Blanca, Cala Sardinera, Cala Portitxol and Cala Granadella are widely considered the best places for snorkelling.
Cala Blanca, also known as La Caleta, is made up of two small coves located next to each other and is easily accessible. It sits at the end of the Segon Muntanyar beach and owes its name to the whitish colour of the rocks of the adjacent cliffs.
Cala Portitxol, or Cala Barraca, is also highly recommended for scuba diving and snorkelling amidst the vegetation that opens out into the sea. The calm water of Cala Sardinera and the lack of crowds of bathers make it easy to get a close look at fish and the seabed.
2. Calpe
Cala Racó, located just below the Penyal d'Ifac behind the port of Calpe, is easy to access and its crystal clear waters make it suitable for both snorkelling from the surface and at a depth of several metres.
3. Altea
There are two great routes for snorkelling in Altea. The Cap Negret route starts on the south side of the cape, and goes around the rocky landscape, which is known coloquially as Negret. The seabed has a depth of up to four metres where snorkellers can see octopus as well as fish.
The L'Olla Snorkelling Route starts from the beach of the same name and has a southeast orientation with clean waters and great visibility. The seabed is rocky and very shallow, between two and three metres.
4. Benidorm
A hugely popular resort for sunseekers, Benidorm is also home to Almadrava Cove and Ximo Cove, perfect for snorkelling. Cala Almadrava is located to the east of the well-known Levante beach and under the Serra Gelada, and the water is warm, clean and ideal for diving.
On the north coast of Benidorm and at the foot of the Serra Gelada sits the small cove called Tio Ximo which combines fine sand and rocks to create crystal clear waters, again perfect for snorkelling.
5. El Campello
In El Campello there's a small isthmus - a body of land that separates two bodies of water - from which water lovers can enter the sea for a magical underwater adventure. The landscape allows divers and snorkellers to enjoy the luminous bottoms in the Baños de la Reina (Queen's Baths).
At the tip of the islet, snorkellers can see a channel that serves as a gateway to the rocky pools connected through small openings that form the Baños de la Reina. It's shallow, so water lovers of all abilities can make the most of the views.
