Introduction to Corvera
Corvera is an outlying district of the municipality of Murcia and is home to around 2,000 people, covering an area of 44.85 square kilometres.
Located on the southern side of the Sierra de Carrascoy, it borders with the districts of Sangonera la Verde and El Palmar to the north, Baños y Mendigo to the east, Carrascoy to the west and Valladolises, Lo Jurado and the municipality of Fuente Álamo to the south.
Throughout its history, the main activity has always been agricultural, falling within the Campo de Murcia, its proximity to the Sierra de Carrascoy dictating the agricultural landscape, split by the ramblas of La Murta and El Ciprés, which collect water run-off from the Sierras. Although much of its landscape is dedicated to non-irrigated cultivation, with crops such as olives, wheat and almonds, there are also areas of irrigation, with citrus fruits and artichokes being major crops.
The district is also split by the Puerto de Cadena and the motorway running between Murcia and Cartagena, a wooded pine forest corridor which gives a contrast to the arid dryness of much of the agricultural landscape.
Due its advantageous location Corvera was chosen as the location for the Region of Murcia International Airport, which opened in 2019.
Corvera is also home to Corvera Golf and Country Club, a residential and holiday development built during the property boom years of the 1st decade of the 21st century. The course was designed by José María Olazábal.
The annual Fiestas are held in honour of the Virgen del Rosario during the first 2 weeks of October and Semana Santa (or Easter Week) is also celebrated with a colourful procession.
