Spain has decided to freeze the cost of butane tanks to avoid price hikes in the last quarter of the year

With rising electricity prices and inflation making it harder and harder for many families living in Spain to make ends meet, the Spanish government has implemented several new energy measures to try to mitigate the impact on ordinary households, including a freeze on the price of butane cylinders until the end of the year.

These butane gas cylinders, commonly known in Spanish as ‘bombonas’, are used to power millions of homes in Spain, and a cap on the cost of a gas bottle is designed to help keep costs down this winter.

This is on top of a promise to reduce VAT on energy produced using gas from 21% down to 5% between October and December of this year.

Now, the maximum limit for the sale price of bottled liquefied petroleum gases of less than 20 kilograms, and equal to or greater than 8 kilograms, is set at 19.55 euros until the end of 2022.

Since September 2020, the price of the butane cylinder has increased by 5% every two months.

At this current price of 19.55 euros, the price is 4.20 euros above the amount recorded in July 2021. These maximum prices are reviewed every two months. From the third Tuesday of the month, the new price of butane cylinders is updated.

For many households, butane gas is still a cheaper option than being connected to mains gas, allowing consumers to “pay as they go”.
