This is how you can help the animals affected by the DANA
Animal shelters, like everything else, have been devastated by the destruction
The floods caused by the DANA have left more than 2,600 buildings and 534 square kilometres devastated. Now, with more than 200 people dead and many still missing, the area affected by the storm is suffering terribly.
Like many families, businesses and establishments, animal shelters and protectors have also been devastated by this tragedy. Cut off, flooded and desperate, some associations have seen their centres completely destroyed.
From the Modepran association, which had more than 500 dogs and 200 cats, to small animal shelters such as Minipow, which had to remove all its rabbits and other rodents from the shelter, they have seen their centres flooded with water.
The situation facing animal shelters is more extreme than ever, with lost animals that they have not given up hope of finding, shelters that need to be cleaned and rebuilt, furry animals that need to be given homes and the reconstruction work can be carried out.
Collection points for food and other necessities
Volunteering and donations from people are the greatest support that animal shelters that have lost everything have right now. For this reason, companies and individuals are organising to collect different pet products that shelters urgently need.
Among these products, the shelters are asking for blankets, feed, kennels, litter boxes, cleaning products and utensils , sand, feeders, beds, sheets, towels, cans of food and medical supplies (to care for injured animals).
Many animal shelters are difficult to access, so collection points are being set up in the surroundings of the affected areas to avoid crowding. These are some of the collection points for aid in Valencia:
- The Fingerprint Factory: C/ del Túria, 60, Extramurs, 46008 València, Valencia
- Casal Falla Arquebisbe Olaechea - San Marcelino: Carrer del Professor Antoni Ubieto, 3, Jesús, 46017 València, Valencia
- CEU UCH Veterinary Clinical Hospital: C/ Santiago Ramón y Cajal, s/n, 46115 Alfara del Patriarca, Valencia
- Lladruc Veterinary Clinic: Carrer de Jordi de Sant Jordi, 13, Camins al Grau, 46022 València, Valencia
- Farmacivet: Carrer dels Tomasos, 14, L'Eixample, 46006 València, Valencia
- Felinaria: C/ del Riu Bidasoa, 53, Benicalap, 46025 València, Valencia
- Miscota: Av. de la Plata, 87, Quatre Carreres, 46004 València, Valencia
- Wild Balance Pets: C/ de Sant Vicent Màrtir, 135, Extramurs, 46007 València, Valencia
- All Tiendanimal centers
For those who want to help from other autonomous communities, numerous collection points have also been established around the country, where all kinds of products can be sent (both for people and for animal shelters).
However, the lists of collection points throughout Spain continue to be updated every day, with more and more places being available to help.
The guide for urban animals Sr. Perro has published a very complete one, but we can also see them through the website of the parliamentary group PACMA , the social networks of the Foundation for Advice and Action in Defense of Animals (FAADA) and there are even those who have created maps with the collection points.
Volunteers are also needed
In addition to donations of both money and materials, animal shelters also need volunteers, more than ever, as they now have to clean up, remove mud and rebuild the shelters.
And not only that, they also need people to help carry out raids to find animals that have escaped , as well as to inspect hunting pack areas, where it is suspected that numerous dogs trapped in kennels have died, but those responsible have not lost hope of finding some alive.
For this reason, they are calling on anyone who wants to come to their shelters to lend a hand in whatever is needed, something that is also being spread by veterinarians, dog trainers and many professionals in the animal sector.
