These are the worst motorways and dual carriageways in Spain
The Spanish roads have been rated in terms of safety, signage and traffic conditions

The roads in Spain will only get busier as the high season approaches so it’s vital to know what to expect on the country’s highways and byways before setting off on a journey. For this very reason, the Consumers’ Organisation (OCU) has surveyed 1,200 motorists and come up with a list of the country’s worst motorways and dual carriageways based on numerous factors including road surface, traffic jams, signposts, the width of the roads and number of lanes.
In general, the worst-rated thoroughfares are those with a high traffic flow, dangerous surfaces and poor exits and entrances.
Here are the 6 worst motorways and dual carriageways in all of Spain:
1. AP-8 Cantabrian Motorway: the undisputed loser has come in with a rating of just 5.7 points out of 10 due largely to constant traffic jams caused by continuous road works and the number of dangerous bends.
2. AP-1 Northern Motorway: this treacherous road runs between Vitoria and Irún and scores just 5.8 points. The biggest complaints are the ongoing works and the lack of services along the stretch, but drivers are also unhappy with the level of traffic.
3. A-49 V Centennial Dual Carriageway: this Seville-Portugal route ranks third worst with a score of 6 out of 10. It stands out for its poor overall design and few service areas.
4. A-7 Mediterráneo Dual Carriageway: this stretch moving towards Algeciras-Almería has been highlighted for the terrible layout of the entrance and exit ramps.
5. AP-9: Atlantic Motorway: the ongoing road works between Ferrol and Portugal make this motorway one of the roads with the worst rating for overall condition.
6. A-52: Rías Biaxas Dual Carriageway: running between Benavente and Vigo, road works again pull the score down here. This stretch has also rated just 6.1 out of 10 thanks to dodgy guardrails and a lack of service areas.
In general, the roads in Spain scored a paltry average of just 6.0 points out of 10, a sure sign that major investment is required, according to the OCU.
