Do you know the meaning of these markings on Spanish roads?
It’s essential that all drivers in Spain are aware of the traffic regulations to avoid expensive fines
The world of traffic signs and road markings can be confusing. Just when you think you know them all, a new one appears without warning. To make matters worse, in Spain, road signs are not just managed by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). City councils and other local authorities can also create new signs, as long as they don't contradict the DGT's rules.
This means that you could encounter different signs from town to town and city to city.
One big concern for traffic authorities is the rising number of accidents involving motorcycles. For example, in 2023, 300 motorcyclists died on Spanish roads, which is almost one death per day.
Motorcyclists make up almost one in four road deaths, even though there are far fewer motorcyclists than car drivers. While the daunting figures aren’t quite as high, traditional bike riders are also some of the most vulnerable users of Spanish roads.
To help reduce these accidents, special markings are placed near the lines that divide the lanes. These markings are also important for cyclists. They are lines that run perpendicular to the centre line of the road.
Motorcyclists and cyclists should avoid crossing these lines, as they indicate the correct path to follow.
The idea is to keep motorbikes and cyclists away from the centre line of the road and oncoming traffic, especially in areas where accidents have happened before.
In Spain, the traffic authorities don’t mess around when it comes to road safety and pleading ignorance won’t help you avoid a fine. So, whether you drive a car or ride a bike or motorcycle, it’s essential to stay up to date with motoring regulations.
