Supermarket opening hours on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in Spain
Many shops across Spain will have reduced opening hours or close altogether on December 31 and January 1
As the year draws to a close, knowing the operating hours of major supermarkets in Spain is crucial for planning any last-minute shopping. Whether you need to prepare for the final dinner of 2024 or pick up your traditional twelve grapes for New Year’s Eve, here’s a breakdown of the schedules for popular supermarket chains.
Most stores in Spain adjust their hours during the holidays, with early closures on Tuesday December 31 and complete shutdowns on Wednesday January 1, which is a national holiday.
Mercadona
Mercadona will be open on December 31 from 9am to 7pm, giving customers ample time to shop before the festivities begin. However, all Mercadona stores will be closed on January 1 and will return to normal hours on January 2.
Lidl
Lidl’s schedule mirrors Mercadona’s, with stores open on December 31 from 9am to 7pm. On January 1, Lidl will not open, resuming regular operations on January 2.
Carrefour
Carrefour supermarkets and hypermarkets will operate on New Year’s Eve from 9am to 10pm, staying open an hour later than many competitors. Most Carrefour stores will remain closed on January 1, though select locations may operate with reduced hours. It’s recommended to confirm the hours of your local store in advance.
Aldi
Aldi will operate reduced hours on December 31, opening from 10am to 3pm. All stores will remain closed on January 1, with normal hours resuming on January 2.
DIA
DIA supermarkets will open from 10am to 3pm on December 31. As with most other chains, DIA stores will be closed on January 1 and reopen on January 2.
Alcampo
Alcampo hypermarkets will welcome customers on December 31 until 7pm. However, specific hours may vary depending on the location. On January 1, all Alcampo stores will close for the day.
El Corte Inglés, Hipercor,and Supercor
These stores will follow a uniform schedule, operating on December 31 from 10am to 7pm. Like most other supermarkets, they will remain closed on January 1 and resume regular hours on January 2.
Plan ahead
While these general schedules apply to most locations, local regulations and store-specific variations may lead to different hours. It’s always wise to double-check the opening times of your nearest supermarket by visiting their official websites or contacting the store directly.
To avoid the last-minute rush and potential shortages of popular items, consider completing your shopping early. With the festive season drawing larger-than-usual crowds, planning ahead can save you time and ensure you’re ready for the celebrations.
