Where will it rain this New Year: Spain weather forecast December 30-January 2
Widespread rain and stormy intervals are forecast along the entire Mediterranean coast of Spain
Weather outlook on New Year's Eve, Tuesday December 31
All through the Christmas period, Spain has been under the influence of an anticyclone – a kind of weather pattern that leads to fine, dry and stable weather. There have certainly been some stormy episodes, particularly in the north of the country, but for the most part, the last couple of weeks have been ideal for enjoying the celebrations outdoors.
However, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of a radical change this week which could threaten the festivities during New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in many parts.
Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the cloud cover will begin to deepen, bringing with it plunging temperatures and a strong chance of rain and storms, particularly on the southeastern coasts.
Monday December 30
Thick fogs were widespread over the weekend and several communities remain on alert because of the poor visibility these cause, including Catalonia and Madrid. In addition, yellow warnings for freezing temperatures have been issued in Aragon, Castilla y Leon and Castilla-La Mancha.
Nevertheless, Monday should be a pleasant day in most of the country, with predominantly clear or partly cloudy skies and very little rain. Showers are forecast in the southern half of the Mediterranean area, where it will be more overcast.
Daytime temperatures will hover between 16ºC and 19ºC in the south of Spain, dipping a few degrees lower in inland areas.
Tuesday December 31
The positioning of a low pressure area to the south of Spain, together with the entry of humidity from the Mediterranean, is expected to create abundant cloudiness and stormy intervals throughout New Year’s Eve. The worst of the weather will hit the east and southeast coasts.
This weather pattern will cause temperatures to plummet in the east of Spain, with few changes expected elsewhere.
A yellow rain warning has been activated in the Valencian Community.
Wednesday January 1
As we welcome the New Year, the instability will continue in the Mediterranean. Widespread rain and storms are forecast, together with very overcast skies, and this could extend to the south of the Balearic Islands.
Temperatures will generally tend to rise slightly. As a result, the frosts will lose their intensity, although they will continue to affect most inland areas during the early hours.
Thursday January 2
Both day and night-time temperatures should rise by a degree or two on Thursday, but the weather will still be very unsettled in most of southern Spain due to the presence of a low pressure area centred over Algeria. This will result in heavy cloud cover with a good chance of rain on the south-eastern coasts.
