Spain declares 3 days of mourning, Halloween events cancelled
Football matches, events and celebrations planned by Town Halls and official government bodies in Spain have been cancelled this weekend as a mark of respect
In response to the tragic consequences of the DANA storm that has devastated parts of Valencia, the Spanish government has declared three days of official mourning.
Minister of Territorial Policy Ángel Víctor Torres announced that this period of mourning will begin from today, Thursday October 31, and continue through November 1 and 2, affecting the Halloween and All Saints' Day long weekend.
During this time, events across the nation are being cancelled as a mark of respect for the victims, including Halloween festivities, sports matches and other events in Alicante, Murcia and many more areas.
Anyone who had planned to attend an event across this weekend is advised to contact the organiser directly to check whether or not it is still going ahead.
The severe storm has left communities grappling with loss and destruction, and both public institutions and local associations are suspending scheduled events in a gesture of solidarity.
President Pedro Sánchez is set to visit Valencia this Thursday, with the government calling for citizens to stay off the roads, many of which are impassable due to flooding.
A Council of Ministers meeting on Tuesday is expected to approve the classification of the impacted areas as a “catastrophe zone,” which would bring additional resources from the Spanish government and the EU to aid in reconstruction.
A crisis response team is already active, deploying over 1,100 members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), hundreds of vehicles, and extensive support from local and national police, army personnel and volunteers.
Several charitable associations who are providing disaster relief to the affected areas have set up funds. If you wish to make a donation, you can do so on the websites of the Cruz Roja or Cáritas Valencia
