Russian hackers attack Region of Murcia government website in solidarity with farmers
The criminals managed to hack into the systems of several official institutions in Spain
A group of Russian hackers calling themselves 'NoName057' has claimed responsibility for a series of cyberattacks on Spanish institutions, including the Region of Murcia’s website, which was temporarily blocked earlier this week. Bizarrely, the group has stated that their actions were carried out in support of farmers' protests taking place across the country.
According to the National Cryptological Centre, the hackers have attempted to breach the security of several other Spanish organisations, including the parliaments of Navarra, the Canary Islands and the Basque Country, as well as the website of the transport company Vectalia, which provides urban services in Alicante.
Although the hackers were successful in blocking access to some of these websites for a brief period, no data theft or malicious code injection has been detected. All affected institutions have since restored their online services, and the Ministry of Finance of the Region of Murcia has confirmed that their website has been functioning normally since the initial incident.
"When it was detected, the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Business, through the General Directorate of Digital Transformation, launched the protocol for this type of cyberattack, called DOS," Minister Luis Alberto explained.
The hackers bragged about their exploits on Telegram and said the attack on Spain was in support of the striking farmers and transport workers. They demanded that the authorities cease sponsoring “the criminal regime” of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and instead focus on "resolving internal problems."
Among their varied demands were "fair prices" for farm produce and "greater control of imports from countries outside the European Union."
It seems that the primary objective of this group of hackers, whose full name is 'DDOSIA, pro-Russian nationalist hacktivist group NoName057(16) against countries critical of the Russian invasion of Ukraine', was to cause temporary disruptions rather than to steal sensitive information or perpetuate long-term damage.
