The health authorities in Spain are waging a war against smoking and one of the most effective tools in their arsenal is price hikes. According to a recent study, smoking a pack a day can represent a monthly cost equivalent to paying for a landline and mobile phone package, internet, and a complete television platform with movies, series and sports, plus a couple of bottles of good wine and a good-sized chunk of Manchego cheese.

 

Cigarette and rolling tobacco prices were already increased in January this year but some of the country’s most popular brands have just gone up again. The government fully intends to add a new tax to the liquid used in electronic cigarettes and other vapes, but the Council of Ministers has now decided to postpone this until April 1.
