Panem is back. And this time, it’s Spain that’s stepping into the spotlight.

 

The Hunger Games cinematic universe is expanding once more with a brand new feature film and the action is heading straight for the rugged mountains and untamed beauty of northern Spain. The latest instalment, based on Suzanne Collins' newest novel Reaping Dawn, dives into the dark history of the 50th Hunger Games and brings Haymitch Abernathy's deadly past to life on screen.

 

As the world of the Capitol and the Districts grows ever larger, it’s Asturias's Somiedo Natural Park that will set the stage for the next brutal arena. Somiedo will serve as the lush and lethal setting for the Second Quarter Quell of the 50th Hunger Games.

 

Filming preparations are already underway. Several crew vans have already been spotted in the area, where they have travelled to finalise the filming details, analyse and detail the spaces where the exteriors will be shot and study the lighting and weather.

 

Fans of the saga will know that every Hunger Games arena is its own twisted nightmare. Past arenas have ranged from scorched deserts to frozen tundras to haunting ruins.

 

The arena for the 50th Games, where a young Haymitch fights to survive, appears at first to be a peaceful forest filled with meadows, berry bushes and crystal-clear streams. But readers know that in the world of the Hunger Games, nothing is ever what it seems.

 

 

In Reaping Dawn, even the beauty is deadly. The water is poisoned, the fruit is toxic and survival depends on much more than skill.

 

Fortunately, the real Somiedo is far from deadly. In fact, it is one of Spain’s most spectacular natural treasures. This national park in Asturias is a dream for hikers, wildlife lovers and anyone in search of sweeping views and raw nature. Here, you can spot deer and brown bears, follow trails to glacial lakes like Cueva and Calabazosa and explore mountaintop pastures such as Braña de Mumián. Charming villages like Pola de Somiedo, El Coto and Villar de Vildas complete the scene.

 

With its misty forests, dramatic peaks and cinematic wilderness, Somiedo is ready for its Hollywood debut. And fans around the world are ready to return to the Hunger Games, this time in a place that looks like paradise but hides danger in every leaf.
