Murcia weekly weather forecast January 27-February 2: Sudden cold snap, heavy wind and rainstorms

We can expect wet, windy weather and tumbling temperatures in Murcia this week

Murcia weather forecast, Tuesday January 28

Last week, while much of Spain was battered by Storm Garoé, Murcia managed to escape relatively unscathed by the rain and it even seemed that the cold had departed for a sort-of early spring. That is all set to change this week, though, as temperatures plummet like a stone and Storm Herminia brings pouring rain and howling winds to the Region.

Before all that, however, Monday January 27 promises sunny conditions for much of the Region of Murcia, at least once the early morning clouds and fog have rolled away. It will be a balmy day, up to 26ºC in Murcia city at the height of the day, though the possibility of rain in Caravaca de la Cruz in the afternoon points to the ominous things to come.

Worst will be the very strong wind on Monday, which the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warns could reach up to 60 or even 75kmh on the coast, bringing waves of up to 3 metres high. Extreme caution is urged when there are weather warnings issued for high wind and waves like this – fasten down patio furniture, avoid walking under palm trees and under no circumstances should you approach the sea.

Weather warnings have also been issued for Tuesday 28 in the west and north of the Region all day long for winds of up to 80 or even 90kmh. Temperatures will also take a sharp dip, dropping by six or seven degrees in all areas, both at night and during the day. The morning of Tuesday brings rain to the whole Region and thunderstorms to the western half, though the afternoon should be dry and sunny.

These dry weather conditions last overnight into Wednesday 29, but the rain will come sweeping back in towards the evening, while temperatures continue their downward spiral.

On Thursday 30, it could be so cold that at least Murcia’s neighbours in Granada and Albacete get snow in the mountains that might also be found in the high-altitude countryside areas of Moratalla or Caravaca. As for the rest, the southwest, northeast and southeast of Murcia are also forecast to get rain by Thursday afternoon, leaving just dark, cloudy and chilly conditions in the centre of the Region.

As we come to Friday, the last day of January and ushering in the new month at the weekend, temperatures will reach their coldest point, even as the rain finally departs and makes way for sunshine to dry out the sodden Region. At night, Jumilla and Yecla will drop down to around -1-0ºC, while in the centre of the Region it will be around 3-6ºC and on the southern coast around 5-8ºC. During the day, temperatures will barely be higher than 16-18ºC, and more like 12-13ºC in the far north.
