Murcia wakes to freezing temperatures and record lows
A yellow warning has been issued for Wednesday morning, January 15
The Region of Murcia has experienced a sharp drop in temperatures, with frost blanketing much of the north and northwest.
Tuesday morning, January 14, saw thermometers plunge below zero in many locations, with Moratalla’s Campo de San Juan and Campo de Béjar recording lows of -8.5°C and -7.1°C, respectively.
Caravaca de la Cruz also saw significant drops, with -6.1°C in La Almudema and -5.2°C in Moralejo. However, the most extreme figure was registered on Monday in La Junquera, where temperatures reached a record-breaking -12.4°C, the lowest since records began.
This surpasses the previous record set in December 2023. The figure was confirmed by meteorologist Juan Antonio Amor on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for low temperatures in the Northwest and Altiplano areas of Murcia for the period between midnight and 10am on Wednesday January 15, warning of lows of -4°C.

The Region’s Ministry of Health has also responded to the cold snap by activating risk level 1 for low temperatures, urging the public to take precautions.
Health officials have advised residents to stay warm, avoid the consumption of alcohol, and ensure that vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, are supported, especially in the face of rising cases of flu and norovirus across the Region.
While the cold poses challenges, it has brought benefits for Murcia's agriculture sector. Farmers with woody crops have welcomed the frost as it delays flowering, reducing the risk of future frost damage and aiding in pest control.
However, for cereal crops, prolonged cold could jeopardise the campaign, particularly due to significant temperature fluctuations during the day.
