ARCHIVED - Mazarron Council adopt stronger stance on gender violence after Camposol incident
A Council Plenary meeting votes to become first municipality in the region to adopt stronger action in cases of gender violence after Camposol suspected murder case
The independent UIDM group’s motion received the support of all the parties in the full Council meeting with the exception of Vox party.
Mazarrón Town Council will be the first council in the Region of Murcia that will be able to exercise “acusación popular” (popular accusation) in cases of gender violence after going ahead with the motion presented by the independents of the UIDM party at the Council Pleno meeting on December 23, with the support of all political groups except for the sole councillor representing the Vox party.
The spokesman for the independent party, Ginés Campillo, stressed in the initiative presented to the Council meeting that "institutional declarations are very good, but we have a responsibility as public representatives to eradicate this evil that mainly affects women".
The approved motion calls upon the Town Council to "adopt the position of accuser in open criminal cases for death, serious injury or genital mutilation that take place in the municipality of Mazarrón."
This is a legal instrument that other public administrations outside the Region of Murcia have already been using in the fight against gender violence and is recognised in article 125 of the Spanish Constitution. With the motion now approved, Mazarrón will be the first Council in the region to act in the defence of victims of gender violence: the regional authorities of Madrid, Valenciana, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra and the Town Halls of Bilbao, Huelva and Barakaldo have previously approved such initiatives.
The motion arises as a result of the death of Vanesa Carter (52 years old) on December 4, allegedly at the hands of her husband Michael Carter (69 years old), in the Camposol urbanisation, which "reveals that our municipality is no stranger to the cruelest expression of gender violence, femicide," the spokesman argued in the motion.
“Acusación popular” (popular accusation) is a constitutional right of legal configuration, exclusive to the Spanish legal system.
