May 30 to June 1 Fiestas of the Trinitarios and Berbers in Torre Pacheco
A grand parade, an arts and crafts market and plenty to eat in Torre Pacheco!
Every year in late spring the town of Torre Pacheco holds its annual fiestas to commemorate the conflicts in the Middle Ages between the Order of the Trinitarians and the Berber pirate raiders from north Africa, featuring a grand parade, and arts and crafts market and plenty of fun and food.
The Order of the Most Holy Trinity and the Captives The Trinitarians, was founded close to Paris in the late 12th century with a special dedication to the mystery of the Holy Trinity being a key element of the organization. The intention of this Order was the non-violent release of Christian prisoners held captive by the Moors, a consequence of crusading and of piracy along the Mediterranean coast of Europe and especially in Spain, and it received papal backing from Innocent III in 1198.
As a result of its papal blessing and its important role in Spanish medieval history the Order was an important element of society in many parts of the country, and among the well-known captives successfully liberated was the writer Miguel de Cervantes, who was kept prisoner by the Berbers for 5 years between 1575 and 1580.
Land in Torre Pacheco was granted to the Trinitarians in the early 17th century, and here they created their headquarters, “La Monástica”, next to the old church. They soon became the most important landowners in the area, a situation which persisted until 1837 when land owned by religious orders was made public by the national government.
