Iryo braces for staff strike: Essential train services to continue over the next fortnight
Operator maintains 73% minimum train services amid union strike action, promising passenger support and alternative travel options
As the year nears its close, the high-speed train operator Iryo is preparing for strike action that could impact travel during the busy November and December holiday periods in Spain. The company has confirmed minimum services of 73% will be in place on strike days, November 25, 26, 27, and December 5, 6, 7, and 8, ensuring essential train routes between cities like Alicante and Madrid continue to run.Iryo has also activated contingency plans to help affected passengers, with alternative bookings being offered from Monday November 24 at 6.00am. In a statement, Iryo’s representatives expressed regret over the strike but emphasised their commitment to a fair, balanced, and sustainable collective agreement that safeguards employees’ interests while securing the company’s future.
Highlighting the efforts made during negotiations, the company revealed it has presented “four economic proposals with significant improvements in base salary, variable compensation, new bonuses, reduced working hours, and new professional classifications.” Iryo also detailed a one-year transitional agreement proposal to better assess market and company trends.
Importantly, Iryo reassured travellers that the strike action does not include train drivers, who already have a signed agreement in place. “We remain fully available to resume negotiations as soon as possible,” they affirmed.
