Car insurance is a legal requirement in both Spain and the UK, yet the systems in place in each country operate in very different ways. These differences can be seen in how policies are structured, the cost of cover and the level of protection provided.

Another important distinction is that the UK operates the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, which compensates victims of accidents involving uninsured drivers. Spain does not have an equivalent scheme, which means that personal legal cover becomes more important for motorists there.
