Hollywood-style police chase from La Manga del Mar Menor to Almería
A driver led police on a dramatic pursuit before being stopped in Níjar
A high-speed police chase spanning more than 100 miles ended in the Almería town of Níjar after a driver, hailing from Torre Pacheco in Murcia, ignored multiple police orders to stop.
The dramatic pursuit began in La Manga del Mar Menor and involved numerous police forces before the suspect was finally intercepted.
The events unfolded on the night of Wednesday January 29 when the Policía Local in San Javier received a call reporting that a man acting suspiciously near the sports centre in La Manga.
Upon approaching the scene, officers identified the man through his vehicle but did not detain him, as there was no immediate evidence of a crime having been committed, despite his extensive police and criminal record.
Later that night, at approximately 11.50pm, police spotted the same vehicle speeding along Gran Vía de La Manga. When officers attempted to stop him, the driver accelerated, ran multiple red lights and entered the motorway, initiating a reckless escape.
The pursuit quickly escalated as patrols from San Javier, Cartagena and Mazarrón joined the chase, along with local police from various Almería municipalities and units from the Guardia Civil.
The suspect demonstrated extreme recklessness, even breaking through the toll barriers on the motorway as he continued his flight.
The chase finally came to an end in Níjar, where the suspect attempted to ram a Guardia Civil vehicle before being stopped and arrested.
Sources close to the investigation suggest that the man may suffer from a mental illness. Authorities are now examining the circumstances of the incident and the suspect remains in custody as further investigations continue.
