German fugitive car thief arrested on the Costa Blanca
The suspect, on the run for 5 years, was collared in Torrevieja
The National Police of Alicante made a high-profile arrest this week when a German fugitive literally fell into their laps. The 33-year-old, who was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant for Extradition, was collared when he went to a Police station in Torrevieja to fill out some routine forms.
When the wanted man tried to carry out his administrative procedures at the station, his name was flagged by the computer, and officers quickly realised that their citizen was wanted by the German authorities.
The arrest warrant was issued back in June 2019 but the crimes the fugitive is accused of committing date back to 2018. According to the police, the man was part of an organised crime gang based in the German municipality of Monheim that specialised in stealing high-end vehicles in Germany and then transporting them to Poland to sell.
In total, the gang stole and sold on 385,000 euros in luxury cars.
The fugitive is not awaiting extradition to Germany, where he faces 15 years behind bars.
