First loggerhead turtle nest of summer found in Calblanque
Volunteers uncover 75 turtle eggs and launch 2025 nesting season in Murcia

Officials determined the nest was at risk due to its proximity of just 13 metres to the high-tide line. With storms expected in the coming weeks, moving the clutch was crucial. Hatchlings are due around early September. The Regional Minister for the Environment noted that this marks the third straight year of nesting at Calblanque, indicating “at least two females” are returning annually .
This latest discovery follows the successful hatching and release of baby loggerheads at La Manga in June and early July . It highlights Calblanque’s growing importance as a secure nesting ground, especially with reduced light pollution and beach access measures in place.
Thanks to the combined efforts of volunteers, Civil Protection and environmental officers, Murcia’s coast remains a vital refuge for this endangered species. Let’s hope the tiny turtles emerge safely come September.
