El Corte Inglés freezes the price of 300 grocery items in stores across Spain
The 90-day price freeze covers everything from fresh fish and meat to olive oil and nappies

With the cost of the weekly shop continuing to rise across Spain, El Corte Inglés has announced it's freezing the prices of 300 basic food products for 90 days starting this Thursday April 23.
According to the National Institute of Statistics, eggs, fresh vegetables, tropical fruits and coffee have all seen some of the sharpest price increases over the past year, so the move should come as a relief to households across the country.
The cost-saving initiative covers a wide range of everyday essentials, including more than 60 fresh products, and takes in fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, dairy, and oils, with both own-brand and name-brand products included.
Among the specific items getting the price freeze are chicken, sea bass, prawns, beef, pork loin, milk, cheese, coffee capsules, virgin and extra virgin olive oil, apples, potatoes, carrots, pasta, rice, canned vegetables and legumes. Water, beer, nappies and cleaning products have also made the list.
The initiative, which runs under the slogan "We guarantee quality at a fixed price," will apply across El Corte Inglés supermarkets, Hipercor and Supercor. To make it easy to spot the relevant products in store, each chain will use its own colour-coded shelf signage: green at El Corte Inglés, blue at Hipercor and red at Supercor.
The group described the move as a way to help families plan their shopping "in a context marked by price fluctuations," and says customers will be able to buy the included products at a fixed price with no variations or surprises.
The company has also made it clear that this isn't just a one-off promotion. Once the initial 90-day period is up, the selection of frozen price products will be refreshed and new items added, with El Corte Inglés describing it as "an action designed to be long-term." Its existing promotions, discounts and loyalty bonuses will continue to run alongside the new scheme.
