ARCHIVED - Cartagena officially opens its three dog-friendly beaches with new signage
Failure to comply with the Murcia municipality's regulations could result in a fine of between 500 and 1,500 euros
Cartagena "officially" opened its three dog-friendly beaches at the weekend with the erection of proper signage outlining the rules and regulations for pet owners exercising dogs on the sands at La Lengua de la Vaca in Los Nietos, Los Alemanes in La Manga and La Calera in Isla Plana.
The first two canine beaches were opened up to pooches, joining La Calera, last July when the Ordinance of Temporary Uses and Installations on Beaches was approved.
This was in response to numerous requests from Los Nietos residents' association and animal protection groups.
The signs, placed at the edge of the beaches, list all the do's and dont's for pet owners on the stretches of sand ranging from 100 metres to a kilometre.
Animals must always be under the supervision and responsibility of their owners; they must avoid causing damage to plants and wild animals; they must not disturb bathers or other users and excrement must be collected and deposited in the litter bins provided.
All dogs must be accompanied by someone over the age of 14, they must be vaccinated, have a microchip and health passport with the obligatory treatments and must also be de-wormed.
Although the three beaches are classed as canine-friendly, some dogs are not allowed: those under four months old and sick or aggressive dogs.
Any breach of the municipal regulations will be sanctioned, with fines ranging from 500 to 1,500 euros, as on other beaches in the Region of Murcia.
