Cabo de Palos regeneration project will include year-round sports and leisure facilities
More than 4 million is being invested in projects to improve Cartagena tourism quality and sustainability
Exciting changes are underway in the Cartagena town of Cabo de Palos, where construction at the Bocana del Cabo de Palos is progressing rapidly. New steps are being built in a designated area for residents and visitors to enjoy, and these works are just the beginning. Cartagena City Council is launching further transformative projects under its Blue Tourism initiative.
Among them is a path linking the port to the iconic lighthouse and the creation of a year-round sports beach at Playa Levante, which, after some early objections, will soon feature facilities for volleyball, a dedicated swimming channel and diving activities.
During a visit to the new facilities over the weekend, Cartagena Mayor Noelia Arroyo explained that these developments are part of the Plan for Sustainable Tourism, an initiative aimed at enhancing the Mar Menor’s appeal while promoting environmental sustainability.
In total, more than 4 million euros is being invested in projects designed to improve tourism quality and sustainability. Ms Arroyo emphasised that the local government is leveraging European funding programmes to modernise infrastructure, improve accessibility and encourage a shared commitment to preserving natural and cultural heritage.
Star projects
The ongoing works at the Bocana del Cabo de Palos, with a budget of 308,212 euros, aim to protect the coast from erosion while creating a multifunctional space for cultural and recreational use. This project is one of six key developments being undertaken by the City Council, many of which are already completed or progressing on schedule.
Another standout project is the restoration of the San Leandro Battery, with a significant investment of 1,072,013 euros, which began in December. Similarly, 732,152 euros has been allocated to restore the Parque Torres restaurant, with the project now approved and ready to go to tender.
In Playa Honda, 223,734 euros is being invested to create an ecological walkway connecting Playa Honda to Villas Caravaning. This project is set to enhance nature tourism and contribute to the environmental restoration of the Mar Menor.
Meanwhile, improvements to mobility and accessibility at Cerro de La Concepción, a Site of Cultural Interest, are underway with 284,361 euros and 250,212 euros has been spent modernising the lighting of Cerro del Molinete with sustainable LED technology to highlight the area’s historical and cultural significance.
In addition to these construction projects, Cartagena City Council is investing in strategic plans to diversify its tourism offerings. These include initiatives in Rural Tourism (78,455 euros), Gastronomic Tourism (167,410 euros), Sports Tourism (241,987 euros) and Creative Tourism (131,075 euros).
Other efforts focus on ecological transitions, tourism governance and the creation of a Tourism Observatory, all aimed at positioning Cartagena as a sustainable and innovative destination.
