Benidorm invests €500,000 for safer cycling on Avenida de l'Albir
New roundabout and bike upgrades set to ease traffic near schools and campsites
Benidorm Ayuntamiento has approved a project to boost road safety on Avenida de l'Albir, the CV-7532 stretch linking the town to l'Alfàs del Pi. Known locally as the tourist road, this 1.6km section between Avenida de Severo Ochoa and the trinquet roundabout became municipal property back in July 2022, after the Alicante Provincial Council handed it over. Mayor Toni Pérez explained that while some fixes have happened since, this bigger update modernises the road for everyone using it.The €411,448 plus VAT plan draws from Next Generation EU funds via the Valencian Community's 2021 sustainable tourism scheme. It targets smoother traffic and fewer risks around schools, campsites, homes, businesses and an events venue. Key changes include a new roundabout at the Villamar campsite entrance, tweaks to access points, and a full upgrade of the bike lane to meet Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility standards.
Narrower lanes where possible will calm speeds, while fresh markings at bike lane crossings with paths and properties aim to keep cyclists, drivers and walkers safer. Pérez highlighted the community angle: this responds to calls from Pla del Cuartel and Pla de l'Assagador residents' groups. A few years back, the Síndic de Greuges even urged the Ayuntamiento to improve pedestrian safety here after local complaints about heavy traffic.
Pérez added that the work should cut accidents and lift daily life for locals and visitors alike. "The measures not only aim to enhance safety but also to increase traffic flow," he said.
If you drive or cycle that way often, expect changes soon that make it less of a worry. Funds are in place, so watch for construction updates from the Ayuntamiento. Better roads mean safer and more peaceful outings for all.
