ARCHIVED - Another day, another ATM robbery in Camposol
Camposol woke on Thursday morning to a Groundhog Day feeling that seems to be ominously repetitive
Early risers visiting Camposol’s B Sector Commercial Centre were greeted with the now familiar sight of the twisted remains of an ATM machine hanging out of the wall.
It is not the first time this particular machine has been targeted: it was ripped out of its housing and dragged away in August 2020.
On this occasion the machine seems to have been prised open by some sort of clamp or digging machinery leaving extensive damage. There are also burn marks, tyre marks and liquid spray residual which could be the machine's defensive mechanism.
The theft follows hot on the heels of the lifting and taking away of an ATM around 500 metres away a week or so earlier, although the Local Police found the getaway vehicle after that incident the cash machine is still missing and just over a year ago an ATM on Sector A was targeted, on that occasion the premises were broken into and the machine levered open from behind. Another on Sector B was attacked using explosives.
For some locals and visitors, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with the current cash machine availability: while the writer was taking a photograph of the latest wreckage two people approached with cash cards in hand looking bewildered at the sight of the mangled metal and asking where the next alternative was.
