ARCHIVED - Zenia Boulevard: largest shopping centre in Alicante province to undergo 18M euro facelift
The shopping complex in Orihuela Costa will have improved green areas, leisure and restaurant facilities
Orihuela Costa's Zenia Boulevard, the largest shopping centre in Alicante province, is earmarked for an ambitious 18 million euro renovation that will see major improvements both inside and out.
The centre, which houses 150 shops, opened in 2012 and since then, 120 million people have passed through the boulevard which boasts its own public squares and fountain and regularly hosts concerts and other events.
According to Zenia's website, it's "the most important shopping centre for miles around".
"The purpose of the refurbishment lies in wanting Zenia to become a lived-in village with a story to tell, a tourist spot where a melting pot of cultures meet, a more sustainable, comfortable place, with more services and technological advances," said management, adding "we are striving to be more than just a shopping centre".
The renovations will be carried out in the coming months and "promise to improve the experience for visitors", as well as to attract new customers from other nearby towns and cities. Façades, floors, street paving and toilets will be replaced or renovated, and restaurants, rest areas, children's play zones and outdoor green areas upgraded.
The works will be carried out during the night and both shops and restaurants will remain open during their usual hours. The centre will also continue to stage activities for the whole family, such as concerts and workshops.
